Overcast skies greeted the 39 footers Saturday morning at Lake St. Louis for the 2001 Glen Mueller Figure 8 Tournament. With a chance of rain in the forecast, the tournament organizers were anxious to get started. Event organziers shuffled through the entry forms and setup the bracket in order to get the event running on schedule and smoothly. The field was stacked with stiff competition from all over. Last year's winner, Marc Donahue was in attendance as were the likes of JJ Link, Keith St. Onge, Ron Blouw, Mike Netzer, Greg Fatla and many others. It appeared that this was going to be a very tough competition.

After getting the first few runs completed for most skiers, the competition had to be put on hold as lightning, thunder and rain covered the course. After an hour or so delay, the boat drivers and skiers once again set out to continue on with the tournament.

The first few runs proved that anyone doing over 2 8's would be a substantial contender and could win the entire Glen Meuller Figure 8 event. The course was proving to be very difficult to navigate after the first 8 completed as the wash back rollers in the two far corners were taking down quite a few footers.

The day rolled on as the top footers proved they are a continued force to be reckoned with. A surprise of the tournament was Tim "Hydro" Knoerzer. Hydro had barely skied all year, however, on Saturday he was skiing like a man possessed. Later in the day, Freddie Deiser had a match up against his own brother Ben. The two decided to both do a deep-up in order to mix it up. The loser had to fill the cooler after the tourney. In the end, Freddie triumphed and sent Ben to the store.

Marc Donahue had a surprising early exit which opened the door for Blouw, Link, Fatla and KSO to make their moves. KSO dropped his first loss to JJ Link but then handily took out Jacob Weber, Donahue, and Fatla before falling to Ron Blouw.  As Hydro marched through the winners bracket other skiers were fighting for their chance to take Tim on in the finals. After Tim sent JJ to the losers bracket against Ron, Hydro was assured of at least a 2nd place finish. Ron made short work of JJ after losing to him earlier in the competition and was then pitted against Timmy in the finals.

Ron needed two wins to take out Tim and claim the 1st place spot. Surprisingly, in the first run Tim went down before the second set of rollers on the first half of the fist Figure 8. No matter, Tim was ready to go again and appeared to be pumped up. After Tim and Ron completed just over one  Figure 8, a re-run was called as a rogue pontoon boat disrupted the course. Following a short time out, the two were in the water and ready to go again. Both skiers looked solid as the rounded out the first 8, however, shortly after, Tim simply lost his grip and lost the handle giving Ron Blouw the 1st place finish.

Thanks to all the skiers and event organizers and sponsors for another great 2011 Figure 8 Tournament. We are now only 2 tournaments away from the 2011 Figure 8 Series Championships.
